Dual Language Cultural Heritage Mural Residency, Spring 2009
This painted mural residency brought two professional teaching artists from English and Spanish speaking backgrounds together to create a painted mural for the school. They worked with First and Second grade Dual Language students, exposing them to arts and culture, teaching them about the visual history of mural making while incorporating the use of word walls to build their dual language vocabulary. Exploring their own cultural heritage through their work on the mural gave students an appreciation for the process of making a mural and showed them the benefits of working as a team.

The students were introduced to new vocabulary related to Egyptian culture and ceramic arts. Exploring the ancient Egyptian culture through clay making gave students an opportunity to practice math and project management skills, as they developed a 2D idea on paper and transformed it into a 3D work of art.
