The Complete Guide To The Arts In Westchester

New Urban Jazz

Live@ArtsWestchester presents the Third Annual NewUrbanJazz™  Series highlighting  the talents four Westchester-based artists, which kicks off on Feb. 4.

ArtsWestchester and NewUrbanJazz also continue their collaboration celebrating and promoting the work of current jazz artists in Westchester County with the release of a new double album recorded in ArtsWestchester’s Grand Banking Room gallery in the last season by Pianist/Arranger Dennis Bell and Vocalist Lynette Washington.

Working in collaboration with guest curator, jazz pianist, composer and radio and music producer Bob Baldwin, ArtsWestchester continues to celebrate the life and local talents of this great American art form through the work of Westchester County’s own masters of the form.

“It’s an honor to collaborate with my friends and associates at ArtsWestchester to develop a music series that showcases the great talent of the County of Westchester.  It would be a disservice to call them local artists. It would be better to say that they are national artists who happen to live locally,” says Baldwin, a  Mt. Vernon native. “It’s about developing a music scene from the inside out, not vice-versa, and we are doing our part to ensure that they receive the notoriety they all deserve.”

CD Release:  Live at the X: Lynette Washington / Dennis Bell Jazz NY

ArtsWestchester celebrates double CD release of a live recording by Grammy Nominee Lynette Washington /Dennis Bell Jazz NY, made right in our Grand Banking Room gallery in January of 2011.  Acclaimed jazz singer Washington and arranger ad Composer Bell have participated for two seasons in our NewUrbanJazz concert series, which highlighted the musical accomplishments of Westchester based jazz artists.  The jazz program, founded in 2009 with support from the New York State Council on the arts has developed into an annual series of four to six concerts.   On January 22, 2011, Lynette Washington and Dennis Bell Jazz NY performed a stunning program of the music that inspires them, including an entire set dedicated to Miles Davis’ signature period during the 1950s and early 60s.  Washington’s set featured a vocal repertoire that inspires her from the work of jazz vocal masters Sarah Vaughn, Shirley Horn and Carmen McRae.  The recording was made by students from the Music Technology Program of the White Plains campus of Mercy College where Dennis Bell is an adjunct instructor.  ArtsWestchester is proud to have presented these current masters of jazz in concert and help make possible the recording of this fine double album.

The double CD album may be purchased at the ArtsWestchester gallery or online at www.guavajamm.net.
