Lana Yu makes abstract paintings about how she feels about someone, something or an experience she had, often using discarded materials for their color or texture. She enjoys giving materials a new life in an unexpected form. In contrast to these emotionally charged pieces, Ms. Yu creates meditative works where her process involves observing the topology of a crinkled canvas and makes choices about what to paint and what not to paint. In this work, Ms. Yu is searching for a natural pattern that runs through physical phenomenon. Her art is a way for her to connect with the flow of nature, herself and others as part of the universe. For Lana painting is a process of self-discovery. The painted object becomes an artifact of her inner and outer world. This art moves between the active and meditative, the chaotic and ordered.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Lana Yu studied design at the University of California at Los Angeles. From an early age she set her sights on creating experiences that would improves people's lives. For twenty years she has worked as an art director designing for print, Web, TV, mobile devices and physical environments. She started painting in 2004 after having a dream about observing other people\\\\\\\'s fascinating art. She awoke to realize that her own subconscious created all the art in the dream and that she already had what she needed to be an artist. Lana is currently painting her meditative canvases and working on her first picture book about the interconnectedness of all things.
